ANTARCTICA For Anne Tarctic

Time of year The time of year that you where choosing to go (June) is a bad time as during the winter months the sun barely ever rises. Probably the safest time to go would be in December (summer) when it is mostly sunny and there is less ice surrounding the continent.

GOING SOLO At your age Anne I think that going to Antarctica on your own isn't a good idea. The harsh and unstable Antarctic conditions means that you will almost certainly get lost. You should hire a professional to take you.

GETTING THERE Tierra Del Fuego in the city of Ushuaia is a great place to leave from because it is one of the closest places to Antarctica and you can catch a plane from there into one of the many airbases in Antarcica Ushuaia

WHAT TO WEAR Clothing for Antarctica waterproof jacket, rubber boots, waterproof pants, pile jacket and/or down sweater and/or wool sweater, socks - heavy wool or synthetic blend, gloves or mittens, comfortable walking shoes or running shoes, thermal, wool, or synthetic underwear, medium or heavy weight, hat - wool, pile or synthetic blend and/or balaclava, sweat pants, sweat shirt, sun hat or visor, short-sleeved shirts, lightweight pants, for men & women, underwear regular everyday type, shorts, first aid kit, including prescription medications, Toiletries, wash cloth, quality sunglasses or high-altitude sunglasses or Solar Shields, spare eyeglasses or contacts, sun-block lotion, sun-blocking lip care, underwear and socks, binoculars (with good strong distance viewing, soft- sided suitcase or duffle bag and a Daypack,

TRANSPORTATION The 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty banned all introduced species, except man, from being taken into the Antarctic. It was with a great deal of sadness that in 1993 the last remaining huskies left Mawson and the Australian Antarctic Territory. The older dogs are living out their days in Australia, the younger, working dogs are enjoying a new life in Minnesota, USA. The best and quickest way to get across the nation would be via a snow mobile. This is a quick and painless process making the trip a pleasure.

FOOD Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins - to supply energy. Vitamins, Minerals, Fibre and Water - to ensure the body runs smoothly. The main sources of energy are carbohydrates and fats, protein is required for the efficient functioning of the body, and can also be used for energy too, so it spans the two groups. Two things were found out very early on in Antarctic exploration - that extreme cold makes people feel very hungry and hard work such as that involved in travelling by dog sledge, or especially by manhauling uses a great deal of energy. This energy had to be replaced by eating enough, unfortunately the early explorers didn't eat enough and suffered as a consequence
