1
The science that deals with the materials of the universe and the changes that these materials undergo
2
Matter Anything that takes up space and has a mass. 3 States of Matter Solid: rigid, has a definite volume and shape Liquid: definite volume but takes the shape of its container Gas: no definite volume or shape, it takes the volume and shape of its container.
3
Changes Physical Changes Chemical Changes Causes a change in physical property Colour Size Shape No new substance is formed Example: Boiling water, cutting gold in half, etc. Cause a new substance to be formed from two or more different elements Example; rusting iron.
4
Elements Building blocks of matter Listed on the Periodic Table of Elements Join together in different combinations to form all matter.
5
Compounds Substances made by bonding different types of elements together. Example: water is made from combining hydrogen and oxygen together.
6
Chemical Symbols IUPAC stands for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, which is a group of scientists from around the world who set rules for chemical symbols. Each element has a short form called a symbol. If the symbol is more than one letter, only the first letter is a capital.
