Department of Architecture and Regional Planning, IIT, Kharagpur Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Salient features- Air Environment Re-suspension of dust and suspended particles along the streets appears to be a serious pollution problem and may contribute significantly to the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM). Pollutants like CO(Carbon monoxide) NOx (Nitrous oxides) and HC (hydro carbon) get added to the air environment due to the enormous increase in the number of vehicles. Air quality may get affected by various sources ranging from vehicular emissions, domestic and commercial activities, Industrial establishments, rice mills and even including diesel generators

Total quantity of fertilizers applied in the Damodar basin during 1983-84 was registering a three fold increase over 1978-79 (over 5 years), the maximum being in Burddhaman district (62%).

Department of Architecture and Regional Planning, IIT, Kharagpur Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Salient features- Water Environment Ground Water Pollution: Quality and quantity of Ground water is very critical in these areas,as is vital for drinking and agriculture. Ground water scenario of the district, though not so alarming at present, indicates the possibility of an un- sustainable situation of any extractable ground water in about 2-5 decades. Quality and quantity of groundwater, though felt adequate for the present, leaves enough concern for the future.

Department of Architecture and Regional Planning, IIT, Kharagpur Perspective Plan for Barddhaman Planning Area – Vision 2025 Salient features- Water Environment Ground Water Pollution: The Quality of water supplied by different water supply schemes of Burdwan district, indicates that the physico-chemical characteristics water supplied are within permissible limits (pH: 7-7.5, turbidity: 0-8 NTU, TDS: 300-400 mg/l, arsenic: less than 0.01 mg/l, chloride: 6.7-12.7 mg/l, nitrate: 1.5-3.5 mg/l, total hardness: 103-253 mg/l). Higher values of iron in drinking water (more than the permissible limit of 0.3 mg/l) is also reported in Parhati (0.52 mg/l), Sridharpur (0.49 mg/l), Barwa (0.42 mg/l), Satgachia (0.78 mg/l), Bohar (0.44 mg/l), Simlon (0.61 mg/l), Bagnapara (0.47 mg/l) and Baidyapur (0.53 mg/l).
