Be working when the bell rings! 1.What rights do you think ALL Americans should have? 2.What rights do you think (this is just a guess!) are actually protected by our government? 3.Why does it matter if we know what our legal rights are?

2 Before we watch a video… We need to know what these are… Constitution – document that set up gov’t, spells out our rights Amendments – changes/additions to the Constitution Bill of Rights – First 10 amendments – protect rights of individuals! Civil Liberties – freedoms we all have in USA, protected by law

4 What are your rights? (these are just a few…!) Fourth Amendment – NO unreasonable searches or seizures (taking your stuff) –usually need a warrant

5 What are your rights? (these are just a few…!) Fifth Amendment – right to remain silent (“plead the fifth”)

6 What are your rights? (these are just a few…!) Sixth Amendment – right to an attorney -- speedy trial

7 If we have these rights, what responsibilities come with them? Your task… –With your partner, sort the following things into 2, 3, or 4 categories. Use whatever criteria you like. If you’re not sure what something means, leave it out and we’ll discuss it. Voting Registering for the draft Accepting other races Obey the speed limit Volunteer Recycle Pay taxes Tolerate other religions Jury Duty Attend school (under 16-yr- old) Be informed about laws Attend school (over 16-yrs-old)

8 Civic Duty v. Civic Responsibility Civic Duty – things required by law for the benefit of the country Civic Responsibility – things you SHOULD do to help the country, be a good citizen Now…try regrouping them based on these categories

9 Duty v. Responsibility Registering for the draft Jury Duty Pay taxes Attend school (under 16-yr-old) Obey the speed limit Recycle Be informed about laws Tolerate other religions Attend school (over 16-yrs-old) Voting Accepting other races Volunteer

10 Who can vote? C. A. R. R. Citizenship – be a citizen One way to become a citizen is through naturalization. Naturalization is when you take a test, and pass certain requirements.
