The RIT / Standby Fire Fighter Primary function is to assist and rescue fire fighters suddenly in trouble !

Class Objectives l Describe RIT responsibilities l Describe RIT response to a report of a lost fire fighter(s) l Describe the function of the standby fire fighter The student, at the completion of this course, shall answer a minimum of 80% correct on a multiple choice quiz.

Objectives Cont. l Describe standard search and rescue procedures and activities for the RIT.

EMERGENCY ESCAPE l Call for help! l The crew stays together if possible l Follow the hose lines out!

SEARCH FOR THE EXIT l Retreat to a safe refuse l Conserve air! l Use last resort methods

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES The Rapid Intervention Team is Established by Incident Commander

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES SEVEN KEY FACTORS 1. Building Construction The type of building may determine the number of RIT’s 2. Occupancy Arrangement High-rise, Multi-family buildings Warehouses may require multiple RIT’s 3. Fire Progression Incipient Phase may not require a RIT, vs Well involved fire.

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES SEVEN KEY FACTORS 4. Arrangement Access for the crews 5. Resources Do you have enough resources 6. Rescue Physically equipped to perform rescue 7. Other Factors in your Jurisdiction

Standby Fire Fighter Initial stage standby fire fighter is (one) fire fighter / driver in the standby mode fully equipped with the appropriate protective clothing, protective breathing apparatus and forcible entry tools needed, based on the specifics of the operation underway. WAC 296-305

Standby Fire Fighter Responsibilities 1. Maintain awareness of the status of the fire fighters. 2. Maintain positive communications 3. Wear full protective clothing 4. Breathing apparatus donned

Standby Fire Fighter Responsibilities 5. Perform other duties per WAC 296-305-05001 (10), (c) 6. Once additional crews are on scene, the incident shall no longer be considered initial stage 7. Primary consideration shall be given to providing a rapid intervention team.

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Located near command post or division 2. Close to the attack teams 3. Monitor tactical talk group 4. Monitor activities of the crews 5. Could be assigned to “ Rescue group”

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES 6. Provide support activities 7. Have appropriate tools a. Hose Line b. Lanterns c. Forcible entry tools d. Hose straps

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES e.Radio f. breathing air quick fill or escape packs g. Infra-red imaging vision system if available

RIT RESPONSIBILITIES Commitment to a Lost or Trapped Fire Fighter(s) 1. Respond only as directed by the Incident Commander 2. Do Not Be the Moth to Flame! 2. Switch to rescue group channel as directed by command ( EMER-Z3 )
