Shop Safety 8.0 Demonstrate personal safety measures in the use of tools, equipment, materials, and fire prevention utilized in agricultural engineering facilities.

Shop/Work Hazards Safety Awareness Safety is being prepared since almost 50% of all farm related accidents involve working with machinery and equipment. Safety is developing an environment free from danger, risk, or injury. The number one key to shop safety is the people who use the shop.

Principles for Safety Keep the shop in an orderly manner to prevent tripping and related injuries. Remove unnecessary hazards such as oily rags. Minimize danger by making certain all machines have safety shields in place prior to and during operation

Wear appropriate protective clothing and devices. Examples: Safety glasses and goggles Leather steel-toed shoes/boots Ear plugs or ear muffs

Safety Color Codes Development of Safety color Coding National organizations worked together American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Safety Committee of the American Vocational Association published a code.

Basic Colors: Red- identifies areas of danger. Red is used on safety switches and fire extinguishers. Red=Danger Orange- identifies wheels, levers, and knobs. Orange=warning Yellow- identifies wheels, levers and knobs that adjust or control machines. Yellow = caution Blue- used on signs such as “out of order” to identify broken shop equipment that does not work properly. Blue = information Green- indicates the presence of first aid and safety equipment. Green = safety

Fire Hazards The fire triangle- components necessary for a fire to take place. Fuel- any combustible material that will burn: oily rags, sawdust, paper, gasoline… Heat- most materials will burn if they are made hot enough. Oxygen- gas in the atmosphere that is not a fuel, but must be present for fuels to burn.

Fire Prevention Take away one of the components of the fire triangle and fire will not start or will stop if it has started. Safe storage of fuels is the easiest fire prevention technique. Clean shop facilities also decrease the chance of fire.

Extinguishing fires Fire extinguishers Know the kind of fire extinguisher that is used for different kinds of fires prior to the fire. Class A,B,C,D fires Know the placement of the fire extinguishers so that time is not taken looking for the extinguisher if a fire occurs. Fire extinguishers should be hung on walls within easy reach in areas where fires would most likely occur. Know how to use the extinguisher

Using a Fire Extinguisher Generally, extinguishers are held upright, the ring pin is pulled, and a lever is pressed. The nozzle of the extinguisher is directed toward the base of the fire to discharge the extinguisher.

Smothering a fire Best used on a person whose clothes are on fire. Wrap the person in a blanket to cut the oxygen off to the fire.

Quizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1.50% of all accidents involve working with ________________. 2.What is the number one key to shop safety? 3.List one of the 4 principles of shop safety. 4.What is an example of appropriate safety clothing? 5.What 2 organizations developed the color coding system for shop safety?

6.What does the color red indicate? 7.What does the color green indicate? 8.What are the three components of the fire triangle? 9.Can a fire occur without oxygen? 10.What should you do if you see someone on fire?
