What is a subject(complete subject)??? The subject of a sentence is what or whom the sentence is about. It comes before the predicate and is usually at the beginning of the sentence. Example: Tom is my friend What or whom is my subject? Tom would be the subject of the sentence because….. Who am I talking about? I am talking about Tom therefore Tom is my subject of the sentence.

Some more Examples……… o Sam has blond hair and blue-green eyes. What or whom is my sentence is about? Sam is the subject of my sentence because I am talking about Sam and saying that he has blond hair and blue-green eyes. o Emily is wearing a orange top and a multi-colored skirt. What or whom is my sentence about? Emily is the subject because I am talking about what Emily is wearing. o The giraffe has very long legs and a very long neck What or whom is my subject? the giraffe will be my subject, because I am talking about how long the giraffe’s legs are and how long the giraffe’s neck is.

Imperative sentence An imperative sentence is a sentence that gives instruction or it is a sentence that states a command. This type of sentence usually begins with a verb. The implied subject is usually you. EX: “make up your mind.” You would really be saying: “(you) make up your mind. In this sentence even though the you isn't actually there, the you would still be your subject.

Some more examples…….. “Go feed the cat.” The correct way to say this sentence is: “(you) go feed the cat.” You would be your subject. “eat your dinner.” The correct way to say this sentence is: “(you) eat your dinner.” Even though the “you” isn't in the sentence you are still saying what the implied subject is.

Simple subject A simple subject is the main word in the sentence This word is usually a noun and it is inside the subject. The word is what the sentence is talking about. EX: Sarah went to the mall. The simple subject and the subject is Sarah and the rest of the sentence is the predicate.

Some more examples......... The girl down the street missed her bus today. What is the simple subject??? The simple subject is girl because that is who the sentence is about. The girl down the street missed her bus today. When Amy went to the party, she got sick and went home. The simple subject is Amy because we are talking about Amy and she is the main idea of the sentence. When Amy went to the party, she got sick and went home.

Predicate (complete predicate) The predicate is the completer of a sentence. Has a verb and it helps understand the subject and the simple subject. Examples: I ate pasta and chicken noodle soup The predicate would be ate pasta and chicken noodle soup because it helps understand the subject I. I ate pasta and chicken noodle soup.

Some more examples of complete predicates …….. I went to the mall yesterday and got a dress. The predicate would be went to the mall yesterday and got a dress because that is the completer of the sentence and it helps understand the subject. I went to the mall yesterday and got a dress. The horse ran so fast in the meadow. The predicate would be ran so fat in the meadow, because this is the completer of the sentence and this helps understand the subject. The horse ran so fast in the meadow.

Simple Predicate The simple predicate is the main verb in the sentence and the simple predicate tell what the person in the story does. Usually the verb in the sentence. EX: Sally needed to fly on a plane at 6:00 in the morning. The simple predicate is fly, because that tells want the subject does in the sentence and it is the verb of the sentence. Sally needed to fly on a plane at 6:00 in the morning.

Some more examples…… Yesterday I baked a cake at my house. The simple predicate would be baked, because that tells want the subject does in the sentence and it is the verb of the sentence. Yesterday I baked a cake at my house. I went home and I ate a granola bar. The simple predicate would be ate, because that tells want the subject does in the sentence and it is the verb of the sentence. I went home and I ate a granola bar.
