4.2 Notes RESISTANCE IN FLUID SYSTEMS

Resistance in Fluid Systems Drag - the force opposing motion when a solid moves through a fluid Drag occurs only when there is relative movement Drag is depends on: 1) velocity of the object and/or fluid 2) size object 3) shape object 4) properties of the fluid

Bernoulli’s Principle As the velocity of a fluid (or an object travelling through a fluid) increases, the pressure in the fluid decreases

Laminar and Turbulent Flow Laminar flow is slow and smooth over a surface Frictional drag is produced by the successive layers of the fluid Turbulent flow is irregular with eddies and whorls causing the fluid to move in different directions Changes in the pressure of the fluid produce pressure drag

Viscosity A property of a fluid that describes the opposition to motion within the fluid Viscosity for fluid resistance is similar to the coefficients of friction What are some applications of viscosity? What factors can effect the viscosity of fluids?

4.2 Lab Proficiencies Set up a system to measure the flow rate of air through a tube Measure the pressure and flow rate for air flowing through tubes of different diameter and length Use pressure gauge to take pressure reading

4.2 Lab Preview EQUIPMENT Resistance Tube Set Mechanical Breadboard Support Rods with Base Pressure Regulator Flowmeter
