1. Egg Osmosis Experiment Anita Chan 8-17

2. PURPOSE To observe osmosis in a cell. 1. Place eggs in vinegar to remove shell 2. Measure weight of the eggs using a balance 3. Measure the size of the eggs using string and measuring tape 4. Place one egg in corn syrup and place other egg in water 5. Weigh and measure the eggs again

3. HYPOTHESIS  Corn syrup egg - Will be heavier than it was before, it will absorb the corn syrup  Size will increase, the egg will absorb syrup  Egg will look darker  Water egg - Will look the same when it is in water  Weight, look, size will remain the same

4. MATERIALS  Eggs  2 beakers  Corn syrup  Vinegar  Balance  String and measuring tape  Water vinegar corn syrup

OBSERVATIONS BeforeAfter Corn SyrupWeight: 71.3 Size: 17 cm Weight 48.8 Size: 13 WaterWeight: 62.2 Size: 14 cm Weight: 77 Size: 18.5 1.Bubbles rising at the top, eggs sitting at the bottom 2.Floating, more bubbles foam 3.More bubbles and foam 4.After the eggs sat in vinegar the egg was soft and squishy 5.One egg was shrivelled, the other egg was puffy

6. Water Egg  got larger because water moved into the egg  egg had lower water concentration than the water CONCLUSION Corn Syrup Egg egg got smaller, water moved out of the egg egg had a higher concentration to lower concentration.

7. CONCLUSION CONT’D  hypothesis was wrong  I said the corn syrup egg would be larger  water egg turned out to be bigger than I had thought it would turn out  the corn syrup egg did get bigger  not as big as the water egg
