1 1-1 Using a Problem-Solving Plan

2 Four Step Problem-Solving Plan
Step 1: Explore Read carefully What do I know? What do I need to know? Is there enough to solve the problem? Is there extra information?

3 Step 2: Plan Reread to identify relevant facts
Determine how the facts relate to one another Make a plan to solve the problem Estimate the answer

4 Step 3: Solve Use your plan to solve the problem
If your plan does not work, revise it or make a new one by asking “What did I do wrong?”

5 Step 4: Examine Reread the problem
Ask, “Is my answer reasonable and close to my estimate?” Ask, “Does my answer make sense?” If not, solve the problem another way.

The following table shows the first-class mail rates in The table shows that weight of a letter and the respective cost to mail it first-class. We need to find out how much it will cost to mail a 9-oz letter. Weight (oz) Cost 1 $0.34 2 $0.55 3 $0.76 4 $0.97 5 $1.18
