1-1 Using a Problem-Solving Plan
2
Four Step Problem-Solving Plan
Step 1: Explore Read carefully What do I know? What do I need to know? Is there enough to solve the problem? Is there extra information?
3
Step 2: Plan Reread to identify relevant facts
Determine how the facts relate to one another Make a plan to solve the problem Estimate the answer
4
Step 3: Solve Use your plan to solve the problem
If your plan does not work, revise it or make a new one by asking “What did I do wrong?”
5
Step 4: Examine Reread the problem
Ask, “Is my answer reasonable and close to my estimate?” Ask, “Does my answer make sense?” If not, solve the problem another way.
