3 Thousands of years ago during the Ice Age, glaciers formed and moved across North America. These then melted and filled in the pits which the glaciers formed, forming the Great Lakes.

4 A waterway that has been dug across land for ships to go through.

5 St. Lawrence Seaway Illinois Waterway Links the Great Lakes with the St. Lawrence River that ends up in the Atlantic Ocean. Links Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River that ends up in the Gulf of Mexico Both are waterways Both link the Great Lakes with an ocean.

6 To connect Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River

7 If the canal had not been built, ships would have no way to get to Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. What effect might it have on the trucking and railroad industries? The shipping industry would lose business because there are no other waterways that travel that far south or connect the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. The trucking and rail industries would have much more business.
