History Castel Sant'Angelo (or Mole Adrianorum or "Castellum Crescentizi“ X-XII centuries), also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, is a monument of Rome linked to the State of Vatican through a fortified corridor called "small step". The Castle has been radically changed many times in Medieval and Renaissance on the right bank of the Tiber River, opposite the ”pons Aelius” (now Ponte Sant'Angelo) close to the Vatican, in the Borgo district. Origins of the name Emperor Hadrian in 135 used the imperial tomb for himself and successors. The memory of these names is in the modern tradition of Adrian Mole. In 359, Honorius includes it in the walls of Rome, transforming it into a sort of fortress to defend the city from then on the name of a “castellum”. In 974 he seizes Crescenzio, family tree, which strengthens them further: it was renamed Castrum Crescent. This name will last until the second half of the fifteenth century, then finally giving way to the current condition. Home

Curiosities T he model of Castel Sant'Angelo was built in the Abbey of Neustift in Tyrol, in the fifteenth century, a unique round church conceived as a fortress to defend against the Turks and dedicated to the Archangel Michael, that’s it is fortified "Engelsburg”. The last act of “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini was located in this castle. It is also the setting in the book ”Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown. In the Roman dialect, the building is called "La Cagliostro ",since the imprisonment of Cagliostro. Castel Sant'Angelo is on the hugely successful video game Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Home
