1-2 minutes PURPOSE: Independence and Responsibility Minimize distractions in transitioning MATERIALS: Book bag may include leveled books, choice books, shared reading folder, reading log/notebook, reading tools (stickies, pencil, pointer) 2nd Grade Video Clip

10-15 minutes PURPOSE: For teachers to explicitly name, model, and break down a reading strategy in doable steps To give students an opportunity to engage in guided practice with the strategy To equip students with reading strategies to support them during independent reading

CONNECTION: (1-2 min) Previous lesson, Personal story TEACHING POINT (4-6 min Teacher names and models the strategy ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT (4-6 min) Students practice strategy with the support of the teacher and their peers LINK (1-2 min) Today and everyday, From now and forever

Differentiation! Small group structures (i.e. guided reading, strategy lessons) Conferring with students

4-7 minutes Purpose: To meet with individuals or pairs of students to research their reading behaviors and Structure: Just like a mini lesson, but start with RESEARCH (open-ended questions)

To read the ENTIRE time Teacher supports students by… Having clear, consistent expectations Anchor charts for process/content Process: Stamina, Reading Workshop Content: Stop/Jot, Connections SET GOALS WITH STUDENTS!

1-2 minutes PURPOSE: To keep students engaged and focused on reading CONSISTENT SIGNAL (“Readers…” “Ready…”) To clarify the teaching point To share a student example To highlight positive student behaviors To offer an additional challenge to readers

1-2 minutes Purpose: To highlight proficient reading behaviors and use of strategies To remind students of the teaching point Teacher shares out student thinking
