Earthquakes (day 6) Finding the Epicenter: Triangulation Part 1

Do Now  How much longer did it take the S-waves to arrive at this station, as compared to the P-waves?  What is the distance from the epicenter?

Aim, Learning Target & Agenda  AIM:  How do we find the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the earthquake  Learning Target:  I CAN use observational data to solve for the earthquake epicenter  Agenda  Do Now  Lesson – Modeling & Check  Practice

Thinking question…  If the epicenter of an earthquake was 230 km away from Albany, where did it happen?

The earthquake could have happened anywhere along the circle

Triangulation  If we have seismic data from three different seismic stations, we can locate the epicenter of an earthquake.

Weird…  “Earthquake-prone Japan has a market for these suits that you strap onto your cats and dogs so that they can survive for days after a major earthquake. Each suit contains all of the necessary gear including water, biscuits, aromatherapy oils, and rubber foot pads, all contained in the pockets of a flame- resistant coat.”

Real Life Connection  GPS uses triangulation to determine your location.

How to Triangulate  We know the first two steps. 1. DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE IN TRAVEL TIME 2. USE YOUR ESRT TO DETERMINE THE DISTANCE TRAVELED

Lets Practice Those Two Steps: **Be careful! Each tick mark is not a minute!  How much is each tick mark here?  20 seconds  Seattle: 1 minute and 50 seconds  Distance: 1100 km

To Continue With Our Steps Here is Our Data:

Step 3  We need to draw a circle around the stations:  Using the map scale we set our compass to the exact distance.  Put our compass starting point on the station  Draw a circle around in the station with the exact distance  Lets Practice!

Line up the first circle hole with the length that you need!!!! Line up the first circle hole with the length that you need!!!! Where the ruler starts on your compass is where you should line it up!

Step 4  Repeat for the other two stations.

Step 5  Your EPICENTER is the point where all three circles comes together – Place a Star here

Practice  Oh no! There was another earthquakes in the US. Use the data from last nights HW to determine the location of each epicenter.  FIRST GROUP TO GET IT RIGHT GETS A PRIZE!  The coolest part about this stuff is you KNOW if you’ve done it correctly because the circles meet.  This is where precision and accuracy are very important!!!!! If you estimate, your circles wont meet!

HOMEWORK  For Tonight’s HW:  Complete the page in your packet titled:  EPIC Epicenter  HINT: You may need to look back in your Text Reading to help you complete this assignment – Page 181 WILL HELP YOU!
