Physical Science 2 nd Semester Physics Draw motion
2
1. Draw a map from school to your house. 2. Place a dot at your house. 3. Place a second dot at the school. 4. Write a paragraph describing the directions.
3
Distance – the length of a path between two points (How many steps taken) Ex: 40m + 30m = 70m Displacement – shortest path between two points with direction (How far away from start and direction) Ex: 50m east then 40m west is calculated as 50m east - 40m west = 10m east
4
Below your notes draw the following: 1. Draw a dot at the top of the space on your paper. 2. Connect the two dots using 5 straight lines in a zigzag pattern. 3. Use a ruler to determine the distance of your path. 4. Use a ruler to determine the displacement from start to finish in cm. Distance (how far your pencil moved) = ______ cm Displacement (line from first to last dot) = ______ cm
5
Motion – change in position with frame of reference Speed – distance moved in a given time (How fast are you going?) ratio or rate s=d/t s=speed d=distance t=time SI unit: m/s m=meter s=second
6
Velocity – speed plus direction Ex: m/s north (How fast are you going in a direction? Ques: If you are going the same speed around a race track does your velocity change?
7
Instantaneous – rate at a specific instant Ex: radar gun measures how fast right now Constant Speed – your speed remains the same Ex: using cruise control in your car Average Speed – total distance travelled in total time (How fast was the whole trip?) Ex: Average speed to Greenville is 42 mi/hr
