Earth’s Orbit Earth moves in a nearly circular path (its orbit) around the Sun. The motion of one object around another object is called revolution.
3
Earth’s Rotation As Earth revolves around the Sun, it also rotates (spins) around its rotation axis. What do you notice about Earth’s rotation axis? Its tilted!
4
Earth’s Rotation Earth’s rotation causes the Sun’s apparent motion across the sky.
5
Seasons The tilt of the Earth’s rotation axis combined with its position around the sun creates the seasons!

Seasons Foldable page 165 On the outside of each tab: Using the tilt of the axis toward/away from the Sun or along Earth’s orbit, label each tab by its position (e.g. December Solstice) On the inside of each tab: The date(s) of that solstice or equinox What season starts in the Northern Hemisphere? What season starts in the Southern Hemisphere? How is the axis tilted – toward/away from the sun or along the Earth’s orbit?
12
Exit Slip What is the difference between Earth’s rotation and revolution? Where is Earth’s axis pointing on the June solstice?
