The Beginning Written Date: 1844 Believed to be written by Poe while on a farm in New York First published in January of 1845 in the Evening Mirror and the American Review under the fake name of Quarles

Public Reaction to “The Raven” The poem was an instant success It is said to be the most famous poem ever written by an American poet It became well known to the public after its publication in the Evening Mirror

What was going on in Poe’s life at the time? In 1844 Poe went to work for the Evening Mirror where he made 15 dollars a week After, he went to the Broadway Journal where he became the sole editor His wife Virginia Clemm was sick and on her death bed while “The Raven” was being published
