The British East India Company gained control of all Indian trade June 1 st,1757 After the Battle of Plessey the British East India Company took over Indian trade. They created a control of trade in the ports of India.

The British Government establishes rule over India (establishes the Raj August 2 nd,1858 Because the British controlled most of India, rule was transferred to the British crown. This time was referred to as the Raj.

Indian National Congress founded 1885 The Indian National Congress was often able to govern the subcontinent by consensus. However, in the years leading up to independence, the administrative body was split by factionalism.

Muslim League wants a separate Pakistani state 1906 In a session of the Indian National Congress, the Muslim League proposed the idea of Pakistan -- a separate state for the Muslim population -- but found little support.

Gandhi’s Salt Marches 1931 To protest the British salt tax, Gandhi led nearly 100 followers more than 200 miles to the ocean to extract free salt from the sea. The protest drew both international press and the ire of British authorities.

Pakistan and India declare Independence August 14 th,1947 In order to protest the British salt tax, Gandhi marched with almost 100 followers for more than 200 miles to the ocean. Once the reached the sea they took the salt for the sea. They brought in the press and British authorities.

First battle over Kashmir August 26 th,1947 At the center of the Indian-Pakistan conflict is the Jammu-Kashmir state, which held mostly Muslims and was governed by a Sikh ruler who signed Jammu-Kashmir over to India. Many Pakistanis say the Kashmir region belongs in Islamic state meaning theirs. Indians however say that they have the legal right to the Kashmir territory.

Gandhi assassinated January 30 th,1948 Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu that believed that Gandhi was too nice toward the Muslim population.
