China Cause Nomadic invasions Confucianism decline Central gov’t diminished Bureaucrats corrupt Free peasants heavily taxed (UNHAPPY) Effect Overall: NO permanent Disruption! –no need for reinvention. Local landlords- took power Daoism rose- but later Confucianism was reborn (in the Tang Dynasty) Peasants lost farms: became daily laborers and had to sell their kids for services

India Cause epidemics Political frantic Invasions by Hun tribes Rajput controlled small states + emphasized military Buddhism declined New Middle East religion Islam Use of older language (Sanskrit) -> declined Hindu text- written in vernacular language (ex: Hindi) Hit hard by international/trade/economic position -> Arabic wrestled for control Regionalism prevailed Effect After all the chaos -> left new sense of art and literature Less drastic than Han China Formed new ruling group -> princes (called Rajput) In Hinduism: worship of mother goddess (Devi) spread Economic prosperity con’t to raise Hindu religious leaders reacted by strengthening emphasis on devotion

Rome Cause Epidemics Politics confusion political/economic life -> SHIFT -> ~180 B.C.E Life-dangerous and hard (economically) Imperial rule decline Cultural decline Blame of the fall: control of society, politics decay, & corruption Effect Population decline Weak emperors Collapse was the worse out of all the 3 nations Lost power in gov’t Tax collection became hard Cultural decline was b/c of either political or economic reasons
