Relative Dating: Determining whether an object or event is older or younger than other objects or events.

A principle that states that younger rocks lie above older rocks in undisturbed sequences.

We assume that the sediments were deposited horizontally. Any changes to that must have happened afterwards.

Sometimes the rocks are disturbed.

The fault or intrusion must’ve come after the sediment was deposited.

The ideal sequence of rock layers that contains all the known fossils and rock formations on Earth arranged from oldest to youngest. We use it to compare when we are not sure of the age of a rock sequence.
