2 ACADEMIC SUCCESS 5 th Grade Team plans lessons according to our Georgia Standard of Excellence and Cherokee County Standards. Each day we are instructing our students to prepare them for their future successes.

3 WE ARE A LEARNING FOCUSED SCHOOL We use research based strategies to engage students in learning. We use technology such as the Promethean Boards, Active table, computer labs, iPads, video conference equipment, and Activotes to activate students’ prior knowledge and check understanding.

5 MATHEMATICS Lisa Nations

6 Students will keep Math Journal. This will have notes and graphic organizers to help them with homework/classwork. It will also be a good resource to study for tests. Homework will be given on as needed basis. Look on back pocket of red folder for HW assignments.

7 FISH BOWL QUIZZES There will be quizzes each week consisting of 10 questions. These questions are from a pool of 100 questions of what the students need to know by the end of the year. The quizzes themselves will not count as grades. They will count as bonus points, participation grade, etc. We hope to see more retention of what we are learning throughout the year. This is a Creekview Zone strategy.

10 LANGUAGE ARTS – READING We will cover our Reading skills: Reading Comprehension and Fluency Vocabulary Literary Elements Using: Historical Fiction Books Fiction Books Nonfiction Books Informational Text Poetry Graphic Text We will blend Reading and Writing skills using our 5 th Grade Social Studies content.

11 LANGUAGE ARTS - WRITING We will practice the Writing Process using conventional writing and technology. Write to Learn Online Writing Program Computer Typing Tutorial Types of Writing we will cover: Expository/ Informational Letter Writing Narrative Persuasive Conventions of Grammar: Parts of Speech, Capitalization, Punctuation, Spelling, and Sentence Structure

15 5 th Grade Science Cells and Microorganisms Classification Genetics Electricity and Magnetism Chemical and Physical Changes Earth (Constructive and Destructive Processes)

16 ISTEM This year, 5 th grade will have iSTEM class time along with the regular Science instruction. This will not only focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math but will i ntegrate all subjects (Reading, Language Arts and Social Studies) into our STEM program. Topics being discussed in different subjects will then be expanded and enhanced by additional STEM like activities and projects. This type of cross curricular instruction will help students put a “STEM” Spin on all subject areas.

18 STEM DONATIONS: Your trash may be a treasure for the STEM Lab! We use lots of recycled materials in STEM so any donations will be greatly appreciated! Please send items labeled with STEM or Mrs. Silk. Boxes – shoe boxes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc Bottles – 2 liters, juice bottles, milk jugs (washed and clean please) String and Yarn Scraps of Material Buttons Paper Towel / Toilet Paper Rolls Ribbon Bottle Tops Cans – Empty and Clean Soda Cans Newspaper Tissue Paper ETC!!!!

19 WHAT CAN WE DO AT HOME TO HELP? Have your child read at least 4-5 nights a week for 20-30 minutes. Have your child keep their reading log in their 3 ring binder. Check red folder each night for HW assignments and information sent home.

21 PARENT PORTAL If we have your current email in the system, that you provided on the Student Verification Form, then the County should have sent you log-in information. If you are having problems logging in or have forgotten your password, you need to email parent.support@cherokee.k12.ga.us and give student’s name, school name and the problem you are having and the County will send you a new password.

23 Visit the Media Center Book Fair – Go by and make selections. Indian Reader Book Club Students are reading 5 books per 9 weeks over various genre. The chart for this can be found in your child’s binder.
