Small-group Communication Communication that occurs in a group setting (3 or more people). Public Speaking Communication from one person to many people in a face-to-face situation.

One-way communication involving TV, radio, internet. *Social Media Combines interpersonal (one to one) and mass communication (one to many).

Difficulties of Public Speaking
Requires careful message preparation. Requires a willingness & ability to face a large group. Requires sensitivity to subtle audience feedback.

Types of Delivery used in Public Speaking
Impromptu Off the cuff speaking with little or no time to prepare Manuscript Entire speech is written out and read Used when exact timing and/or wording is necessary

Used in place of a manuscript when attention needs to be devoted to delivery Big disadvantage of forgetting! Extemporaneous Brief notes of main ideas are used Involves thorough preparation
