Vocabulary Aftershock Earthquake Zones An earthquake after the main earthquake (the aftershock is less powerful) Areas of the earth where earthquakes are most likely to happen due to the movement of the plates.
3
Vocabulary, continued… Epicenter Fault The place on the earth’s surface that is directly above the focus, the point where an earthquake begins. A break in the earth’s crust where plates slide past each other.
4
BONUS POINT!!! The place on the earth’s surface that is directly above the focus is called: A.Aftershock B.Earthquake zones C.Epicenter D.Fault
5

8
Vocabulary, continued… Focus Magnitude The spot under the surface of the earth where the rock first breaks. The measure of the strength and power of an earthquake.
9
Vocabulary, continued… Seismograph Tectonic Plates Instruments that measure the movements of the earth. The 30 pieces that the earth’s crust is broken into. Always moving!

Basic Facts of Earthquakes Earthquakes are sudden (without warning!) Powerful earthquakes can sound like a large train or truck. Earthquakes don’t last very long.
15
Do all earthquakes cause damage? There are more than 8,000 minor earthquakes every day on our planet. Less than 100 are strong enough for us to feel.
16
What causes earthquakes? The earth’s crust is made up of moving plates. When the plates meet at a fault and push against each other, it causes the plates to break or crack. The crack sends waves or vibrations around the earth known as an earthquake.
17
BONUS POINT!!! A powerful earthquake can sound like a… A.Cat B.Train C.Sneeze D.Cough
18
BONUS POINT!!! What causes an earthquake? A.Old buildings falling down. B.Plates moving along a fault that push against each other and break. C.The earth moving faster in space.
19
BONUS POINT!!! About how many earthquakes occur on our planet every day? A.100 B.10 C.80 D.8,000
20
Are earthquakes dangerous? Scientists say that earthquakes are not dangerous, the falling buildings and other debris are dangerous.
21
What do I do if there is an earthquake? Move away from things that could fall or break. Move away from windows. Get under a heavy table, bed, or counter. Have an emergency kit ready with food and supplies in case the power goes out!
22
BONUS POINT!!! Do all earthquakes cause damage? A.Yes B.No
23
BONUS POINT!!! Where should you go in an earthquake? A.Outside B.To the window to watch C.Under a table or bed D.An elevator
