Evolution objectives Students should be able to… 1. Describe what the Theory of Evolution states. 2. Name the person who developed this theory and describe how he developed it. 3. Define the following and give an example of each. Species Population Natural selection 4. Describe how fossils and strata provide evidence for the theory of evolution. 5. Determine the age of rocks and fossils using radioactive dating. 6. Describe an example of homologous structures. 7. Determine allele frequencies. 8. Describe what the Hardy-Weinberg (H-W) principle /law/ theory states and be sure to list the 5 H-W conditions.

Evidence of Evolution The Fossil Record Geographic Distribution of Living Things-similar environments have similar types of organisms Homologous Body Structures Similarities in Early Development
6
Theory of Evolution Change accumulates in a population over time.
7
Theory of Evolution Hypothesis IF populations accumulate change over time IF populations accumulate change over time THEN species that look similar should have close common ancestors
8
Homologous Structures - Look similar, but… - the structures have different mature forms in different organisms, - develop from the same embryonic tissue - do not necessarily have the same function
10
Evidence for Evolution If…then organisms will have… Vestigial organs-organs that serve no useful function in an organism OR does not have the original function. Vestigial organs-organs that serve no useful function in an organism OR does not have the original function. e.g. appendix, miniature legs, etc

Meets expectations Complete comparative anatomy worksheets. Assignment Exceeds expectations Exceeds expectations Choose non-human bone from class collection and identify it. Describe differences and similarities between the bone and the human equivalent. Take a picture of the bone and label each part. Describe and show 3 vestigial organs from non-human vertebrates. You cannot use any the worksheet or class examples that I mentioned.
