5. Why schools do not take responsibility for learning The teacher may not believe that a school can succeed with all students. Bad experiences, inability to reach all children, teachers don’t understand the problems today’s children present. Answer to this is to see who in your school is successful in reaching students you are having trouble with. The teachers may not feel personally competent to succeed with all students. Must provide support (teachers and students) Must include “creative tension” in the school. (more connection with teacher/student relationship)

7. Reward and Punishment Traditionally –If the student doesn’t comply, he or she is punished If the punishment doesn’t work…he or she is suspended or expelled This usually doesn’t solve the problem

8. A Better Way… Find and strengthen the positive and healthy elements, no matter how deeply they are hidden. A strength-based approach to viewing and “treating” young people has been developed.
