1 The Old Stone Age Homo Erectus. 500,000-750,000 years ago. Stood upright and learned simple tool use. Developed and spread in Africa and to Asia and Europe. Homo sapiens sapiens. 240,000 years ago. Hunters-gatherers, language, sophisticated tools.

3 The Old Stone Age Nomads. Roaming, follow the food. Development of language, tools out of stone, use fire. Foraging societies. Hunter—gatherer. Traveled as climate and availability of plants and animals dictated. Climate changes, disease, famine, and natural disasters could endanger or eliminate entire communities.

4 The Old Stone Age Domesticated animals for an improved food supply. With the increased food supply was an increased population, and with that, conflict.

5 Neolithic Revolution Development of agricultural societies. Began in the Middle East around 10,000 BCE and spread to India, North Africa and Europe. Agriculture led to more permanent settlements. Then able to specialize in economic, political and religious functions. Increased population with a more stable food source.

6 Metalworking 3000 BCE to Middle East Useful to agricultural and herding societies. More efficient farm tools and weaponry. Not popular. Took time and labor, which many could not spare.
