KEY VOCABULARY Biological contamination Living (or once-living) organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, present in ground water, surface water, land or the atmosphere Chemical contamination The presence of chemicals such as fertilizers, gasoline, oil, heavy metals, or acids introduced into ground water, surface water, land or the atmosphere. Waterborne disease A disease carried by water, such as cholera. Water contaminants Any substance, chemical or biological, that pollutes water. Water contamination When water is polluted by a substance, either chemical or biological. Water pollution Contamination by chemical or biological substances that make water unsafe for living things.
