Interesting Fact: HE was born in 1928 but his father says it was in 1927. BEGINNING

Nickname: Gabito “little Gabriel” Interesting Fact: His grandmothers tales were so convincing he refused to leave his chair because the house was supposedly “haunted”. Childhood: After his grandfathers death, Nicolás Ricardo Márquez Mejía (Colonel veteran of the War of a Thousand Days), at the age of 8, when his grandmother was going blind, he left their house and start anew adventure in his parent’s care. He barely knew his parents, and as soon as he arrived he went to boarding school, where his writing history begins. His reputation was being called the “Old Man” for his social- awkwardness, and his tendency to write humorous poems, and ability to draw cartoons. BEG. CONTINUED

At the age of 12 he was given a scholarship of to a school for gifted students, in 1940, at Bogotá. Even though, he may not have liked Bogotá, his experience confirmed he was costeño or coastal type. While in school, he grew quite interested in his studies, and at some point read to his fellow peers, and earning the reputation as a writer. But at the age of 18 he used his knowledge in writing to enroll in the law school of Universidad Nacional in Bogotá, instead of being a journalist. On one occasion, while visiting his parents, he met a 13 year old named Mercedes Barcha Pardo, and future wife. Interesting Fact: He engaged to her but she told him to wait so that she could finish her schooling. They married 14 years later. TEENAGE YEARS

Like most college students, he had no interest in his studies, slacked off, and instead walked all over Bogota, doing cigarettes, at the same time reading poetry. A book brought him back to reality, and it was a copy of Kafka's The Metamorphosis. He was so astounded that he returned to his studies, and went after his studies again. The book just reminded him of his grandmother’s tales. After his studies, he would write fictional stories, and his first story, "The Third Resignation,“ would be published in the El Espectador, Bogota’s newspaper. He was hailed as a genius. He kept writing tens of fictional stories after that for the newspaper. COLLEGE YEARS

Since he was a humanist, from a Liberal family, he was affected when Gaitan was assassinated in 1948. He participated in the riot, causing his college to be partially burned down. So he was forced to move to the Universidad de Cartagena. He continued to study law, until 1950 when he no longer had interest with law. He continued with his passion writing nad wrote many books from then on. CONTINUED
