2. By about 2130 B.C., Egyptian kings began to lose their power to local rulers of the provinces. For about 500 more years, the kings held Egypt together, but with a much weaker central government. A central government is one much like the United States, in which various levels of the government hold different levels of power. This period of Egyptian history is called the Middle Kingdom.
