Lunch and Learn: A Collaborative Time for North Carolina Teachers Your Presenter Information
2
Thank You Burroughs Wellcome Your lunch today was provided through a generous donation by Burroughs Wellcome
3
Goals for Lunch and Learn Network with teachers from across North Carolina to share resources for implementation of Common Core State Standards. Review important NCDPI resources. Review latest assessment information. Participate in grade level activities that support deep understanding of standards.
4
New Friends Introduce yourself to the teachers in the room by sharing the following information… Name, School, County What is your favorite number? Explain.
5
Major Work Third Grade Major ClustersSupporting/Additional Clusters Operations and Algebraic Thinking Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. Multiply and divide within 100. Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic. Number and Operations—Fractions Develop understanding of fractions as numbers. Measurement and Data Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition. Number and Operations in Base Ten Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Measurement and Data Represent and interpret data. Geometric measurement: recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures. Geometry Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Grade 3-5 Assessment
8
Assessment items will be designed, developed, and classified to ensure that the cognitive rigor of the operational test forms align to the cognitive complexity and demands of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics. These items will require students to not only recall information, but also apply concepts and skills and make decisions.
9
Grade 3-5 Assessment Grades 3 and 4 mathematics assessments will consist of four-response-option multiple-choice items. The Grades 5–8 mathematics assessments and the Algebra I/Integrated I assessment will consist of four- response-option multiple-choice items and about twenty percent gridded-response items requiring numerical responses. All CCSS mathematics assessments will include both calculator-active and calculator-inactive sections.
10
Grade 3-5 Assessment One-third to one-half of the Grades 3–8 assessments will be comprised of calculator-inactive items. Grades 3–8 mathematics assessments will be designed for paper/pencil administrations and may have an online administration option. If the EOG is 1/3 to ½ calculator-inactive, what are the implications for preparing students? Discuss at your table.

Third Grade Unit Area and Perimeter http://maccss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/file/view/3rdGr adeUnit.pdf http://maccss.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/file/view/3rdGr adeUnit.pdf
12
Third Grade Unit Phases of the lessons Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate Formative Summative
13
Third Grade Unit Goals of the Unit… Develop an understanding of the concept of area Understand and use square units Use non-standard and standard units to measure area Relate the areas of rectangles to rectangular arrays and multiplication Find the areas of rectilinear figures
14
Third Grade Unit Goals of the Unit… Develop an understanding of the concept of perimeter Describe the relationships between area and perimeter Calculate the perimeters of polygons Calculate the perimeters of rectilinear figures Find the missing side length of a rectilinear figure
15
Third Grade Unit Add whichever Third Grade Unit you want for the Lunch and Learn participants to do. Remember… the goal is to have participants ready to implement this unit. Use your professional judgment as to which tasks you want the participants to do.
