3 The Roots of Modern Science For hundreds of years people looked at the world and believed what Aristotle and and the Church said about it Scientific Revolution: a new way of thinking about the natural world.

4 The Earth Around the Sun? It had always been believed that the universe circled the flat earth. A guy named Copernicus studied planets and discovered that all planets revolve around the sun!

5 Along Comes Galileo Galileo used a new invention, the telescope, to prove many things. - Jupiter had many moons - Our moon had mountains - Copernicus’ theories were right!

6 Catholic Church Reacts Everything Galileo said went against the Church. The Church put him on trial and forced him to admit he had lied. How dare he!

7 A New Way of Thinking Over time this questioning and studying lead to the creation of Scientific Method. A logical way of gathering and testing ideas.

8 Leading to New Discoveries Using scientific method lead to the creation of many important things. Microscopes Understand the human body Vaccines

9 Why this is important for our class The development of science lead people to question beliefs they’ve always had about: ChurchKings The right to govern ourselves! The keyword is: QUESTIONING!!!
