15
Resources Renewable resources- a natural resource (such as wood and water) that can be replenished or replaced by natural processes Non-renewable resource- a resource which cannot be replaced once it is used up, for example fossil fuels(oil, natural gas and coal).
16
Sustainable energy Energy that can be replenished within a human’s lifetime and causes no long-term damage to the environment.
17
Forms of Energy Mechanical energy: The energy of motion used to perform work. Mechanical energy can be either kinetic energy (energy of motion) or potential energy(stored energy) Electrical energy- Electricity is energy transported by the movement of electrons
18
Forms of Energy Thermal energy the movement of energy from one substance to another; in the form of heat.
19
How is electricity generated? A Generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The process is based on the relationship between magnetism and electricity.
20
How is home electricity generated? A turbine converts the kinetic energy of a moving fluid (liquid or gas) to mechanical energy. Steam turbines have a series of blades mounted on a shaft against which steam is forced, rotating the generator.
