Introduction Corrosion may be defined as the chemical deterioration of a material. Metals are the key materials that are subject to corrosion, but polymers and ceramics can also corrode. Metallic corrosion involves the deterioration of metals or metal alloys, and is basically the reverse of the refining process. Most metals occur as chemical compounds, and corrosion progressively returns them to this state.

Oxidation and reduction Oxidation occurs when the metal loses electrons, and it occurs at the anode. Oxidation = loss. Reduction is the consumption of electrons and occurs at the cathode. It is the opposite to oxidation, therefore reduction = gain. OILRIG
