12. Protists and Disease Giardiasis: causes severe diarrhea and intestinal cramps that can last for 2-6 weeks Amebic Dysentery: causes pain, bloody diarrhea, and fever. Can be fatal if moves into brain Toxoplasmosis: a small number of people develop flulike symptoms, dangerous to developing fetuses Trichomoniasis: STD, women experience discolored discharge, genital itching, and urge to urinate. Cryptosporidiosis: severe cramps and diarrhea that may last up to 2 weeks Chagas Disease: spread by kissing bugs, and can cause several heart related issues Malaria: spread by mosquitoes, causes liver damage and destroys red blood cells causing fever & Anemia. Can lead to death if left untreated.
