Science D1 and d2 Lesson 1 and Lesson 2
2
Is it living or nonliving? Does it grow? Does it use food to get energy? Does it get rid of wastes? (go poo) Does it reproduce? (make more of themselves or make babies) Does it react to changes in its environment?
3
Is it living or nonliving?
7
Cells Animal or Plant
8
Plant cells have cell walls Plant cells have chlorophyll Animals don’t.
9
Cells There are many kinds of different cells. Each has its own job.
10
Red Blood Cells
11
Nerve Cells

Lesson 2 Classifying Living Things Classifying means to put into groups. All living things are grouped into different kingdoms. Scientists use classification systems to help them study living things.
17
Six KINGDOMS Ancient bacteria Bacteria Protists (Sheraton the plankton from Spongebob) Fungi (mushrooms) Plants Animals
18
Traits – is a characteristic of a living thing. You and your Mom or Dad share traits: Black hair. Maybe the same shaped eyes. Check out your ears.

20
Let’s look in the Kingdoms. In each Kingdom, the kingdom has more groups. Smaller groups. Do you remember them? Remember the Rap Song’?
21
How are organisms grouped within a kingdom? Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
22
Bacteria The smallest and simplest microorganisms. No cell nucleus. Some can break down dead plant matter for food. Some make their own food. Do you need bacteria in your intestines?
23
Fungi Microorganisms that have some traits of plants. Fungi Cells have a cell wall. But NO chloropolasts so can’t make their own food. Yeast is a fungus that we use to make bread.
24
Protists Organisms in the protist kingdom have a cell nucleus. A paramecium has many kinds of structures or parts inside its cell. They are organ like. Algae are protists, they make their own food. Many are harmelss. But some can cause serious diseases like malaria.
25
How are organisms named? Scientists use the Genus and Species to name organisms. It helps classify living things at the same time easier to understand what they are. The first of the name is the Genus. The second part of the name is its species. HOW CAN CLASSIFYING A POISONOUS SPIDER HELP SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE?
