2 Review terms Hasty Generalization a conclusion formed without evidence, often the product of an emotional reaction. Red Herring something intended to divert attention from the real problem or matter at hand; a misleading clue.

3 More terms False cause identifying an improper or unrelated cause for an observed effect. Bandwagon a party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers.

4 Prefixes Re- Again; anew: rebuild. Backward; back: react. Un- Not: unhappy. Opposite of; contrary to: unrest.

5 More prefixes Mis- Bad; badly; wrong; wrongly: misconduct. Failure; lack: misfire. Used as an intensive: misdoubt. De- Do or make the opposite of; reverse: decriminalize. Remove or remove from: delouse; deoxygenate. Dis- Absence of: disinterest. Opposite of: disfavor.

6 Suffixes -Able inclined or given to a specified state or action: changeable. -Ous Possessing; full of; characterized by: joyous. - Ment Action; process: appeasement. -Ness State; quality; condition; degree: brightness. -Ful Characterized by; resembling: masterful. Tending, given, or able to: useful.

7 More terms Hyberbole an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.” Pun A play on words, sometimes on different senses of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words. Alliteration the commencement of two or more words of a word group with the same letter, as in apt alliteration's artful aid. Synecdoche a figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for a part, the special for the general or the general for the special.

8 Other terms Tone a particular quality, way of sounding, modulation, or intonation of the voice as expressive of some meaning, feeling, spirit, etc.: a tone of command. Allusion a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication: an allusion to Shakespeare. Metonymy A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated. Mood a distinctive emotional quality or character: The mood of the music was almost funereal Annotation a critical or explanatory note or body of notes added to a text. Assonance rhyme in which the same vowel sounds are used with different consonants in the stressed syllables of the rhyming words, as in penitent and reticence.
