Toward Democracy Debate over male suffrage led to the organization of the women’s suffrage movement. Not achieved in U.S. until 1920, with passing of the 19 th Amendment.

Civil War (1861-1865) Was fought to preserve the Union Not to bring an end to slavery (becomes a means to an end) Interesting Lincoln along with most northerners were racist Fighting not nearly as bad as depicted Took breaks to swim in rivers together, spend Christmas together
