4 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT HOW WE DECIDE WAYS TO BE SAFE AND HAPPY. WE WILL OBSERVE, (THIS MEANS WATCH) WE WILL LISTEN WE WILL WORK AS A TEAM WITH SERVICE USERS, CARERS, PARENTS, PROFESSIONALS. WE CAN ASK PEOPLE YOU KNOW IF YOU WANT US TO. WE CAN USE SIGNS AND SYMBOLS

5 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT Once we know how a person likes to do things we do:  Risk Assessments  Support Plans  Reviews Support Plans show staff the way a person chooses and needs to be supported. It’s their lives – not ours. People change – things work, things don’t work. We can change support plans – this is called reviewing.

6 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT How we support a person to be safe  Every one is different  Individual personality  Individual ways to do activities  Different levels of safety  Different levels of independence.  What the person wants and needs to do for themselves.  Support when needed (trust, relationship, fun and laughter)  Agreed Boundaries  ‘It don’t matter – we can sort it’.

8 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT CHOICES & DECISIONS What our tenants say: ‘Support staff talk to me about good things and bad things that could happen. It helps me understand so that I can make decisions for myself’.

9 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT RISKS WHAT OUR TENANTS SAY ‘We take risks, sometimes unwise ones but I still do them. I learn and I have pride and dignity.

10 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT PROTECTION We can be under-protective or over-protective. People have different opinions – we work together as a team with individuals, carers and people who are qualified to agree on risks people want to take. We have the Mental Capacity Law – we work together to make this happen We have plans in case a person finds themselves in risky situations.

11 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT PROTECTION What our tenants say: ‘ I go swimming with my friends, doing what I like. Staff are there to sort it out if I get picked on or bullied’. ‘Staff help me understand good secrets and bad secrets. If I have a bad secret, I tell staff’’.

12 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT ENVIRONMENT What our tenants say: ‘Staff help me to keep windows and doors locked at night and when I go out’. ‘Staff help me when I am cooking – staff do the risky bits so that I don’t burn myself’.

13 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT We help look at the activity or house and check health & safety for those who cannot do this for themselves. Risk assessments for activities. Health & safety checks for houses and equipment.

14 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT BEING HAPPY AND FEELING GOOD What our tenants say: ‘If I say I am wobbly staff help me sort out my worries’. ‘Numbers tell people how I feel. Staff are Mrs Sorters’. Some people cant put into words how they feel

16 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT I am here to tell you what my son would say if he was here. As a parent the most important thing is that my son is now safe and happy, but with Reach we have gone beyond that now. Not only is he safe and happy, he is emotionally settled, is always active – out in the community and for the first time in his life he has friends and a home where he can invite them for tea.

17 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT Before Reach became my son’s support provider he was at risk of a ‘breakdown’. They have now stabilised the situation and enabled him to take back control and move forward happily.

18 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT As a parent I feel that I know my son better than anyone and for the first time, with Reach, they have listened and have helped him to take risks, develop, learn and be confident in everything he does. Staff go into his world and together, move forward. The consistency of the happy and trusting staff team, the positive safe environment makes all the difference. Learning what is important to my son is vital and this is what Reach has achieved. Learning what is important to my son is vital and this is what Reach has achieved.

19 REACH HOUSING & ENABLEMENT Emotional safety for my son is the most important thing in his life and the support and friendship of his staff team helps to achieve this. We trust Reach with our son.
