Violence against women technical term used to collectively refer to violent acts that are primarily or exclusively committed against women. Types of Violence Dating Violence - is when one person purposely hurts or scares someone they are dating Domestic Violence - is when one person in a relationship purposely hurts another person physically or emotionally Same sex Relationship Violence - Her partner may hit her, try to control her, or force her to have sex

Types of Violence Sexual Abuse and Assault – violence committed by a stranger or maybe your own husband Violence against Immigrant and Refugee Women - Made to "lose face" in her community Violence against Women at Work - women are hurt by someone they know, like a co-worker, customer, client, or patient

Types of Violence Violence against Disabled Women - Caregivers can withhold medicine and assistive devices, such as wheelchairs or braces. They can also refuse to help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, or eating

Violence Against Women Act was developed and passed as a result of extensive grassroots efforts in the late 80's and early 1990s, with advocates and professionals from the battered women's movement, sexual assault advocates, victim services field, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors' offices, the courts, and the private bar urging Congress to adopt significant legislation to address domestic and sexual violence
