Using the Human Patient Simulator in the PBL Curriculum Gail Swarm, D.O. Clinical Director of PBL WVSOM
2
What is PBL? Small groups Student-directed learning Facilitated Case-based Basic science is linked to concrete clinical problems
3
Case of Larry Farmer This case was about a 9 year old with tetanus Student generated learning issues covered areas of: Microbiology Pharmacology Physiology of nerve conduction and muscle contraction Immunology…and others..
4
Students came to the realization that their patient needed to be intubated What is intubation? How is it performed? Can we see a demonstration?
5
Intubation lab is born! First students practiced on intubation models –Different airways, masks were demonstrated also Then students practiced on the HPS
8
HPS labs were offered 3 different cases related to previous learned cases Tetanus (revisited) Heart Failure COPD and elevated BP
9
Goals for the experience Learn to get a history in a more emergent setting Utilize physical diagnosis skills Pharmacology and “real-time” physiologic changes Learn to use medical equipment Teamwork
10
Observations Students tended to talk to me Worked through the problems through a biomedical model Tended to rely on the monitor and not their own assessment
