In the New World of Dentistry: Looking at oral health as a whole and where that fits into general health i.e. smoking cessation + diet Not just about treating disease + tooth decay – more around prevention

Oral Health Strategy for 2005 -2010 The main purpose: - improve the oral health of the people of Southend - identify how the PCT can proactively ensure that access to NHS dentistry is maintained + improved Starting point: DH’s plans for a healthier nation, as defined in the Modernising NHS Dentistry – Implementing the NHS Plan Sept 2000

The Main targets: Improve Access to NHS Dental Improving the Quality of Care Improving Oral Health and Reducing Inequalities

The Strategy looks at The Way forward Framework for the OH Delivery Plan - progressing the new contracts - recruitment - how best to meet the needs of patients - appropriate secondary + tertiary care - expand the clinical audit programme - develop links to postgraduate education - - community- based OH promotion linked to general health

The new contract at a glance: Patients Continue to see their dentist regularly, if not PCT advise - other dentists taking on new patients Range of treatment and charges – poster in every dental practice Benefit from more preventative approach to care Dentists still be able to offer NHS + private treatment - patient choice Proposed number of charges reduced from 400 to 3

The new contract at a glance: Dentists Gross earnings will be protected for 3 years Will see their own patients + choose to see patients requiring urgent treatment Agreed contract value will be paid in 12 monthly instalments The clinical freedom to provide the treatments considered to be necessary Able to undertake prevention without financial penalty NHS pension benefits preserved

The new contract at a glance: PCT A new responsibility for organising the delivery of primary dental services in the area To do this, the PCT ‘s dental budget allocation will be devolved to the PCT to commission dental services The funding will stay with the PCT, if a contractor leaves the service or moves outside of Southend PCT’s will be responsible for dental public health – have a duty to assess local health needs + commission services Provide support to the dentists + patients
