2. M ETAPHOR Metaphor - A comparison between two unlike things. When you use a metaphor, you are saying that something IS something else. “Aunt Queen’s eyes, which commanded immediate respect, sparked with a fire that matched the shine on her highly polished wheelchair— her throne.”

3. S IMILE Simile -A comparison between two unlike things using like or as. It is when you say something is LIKE something else. “Angel loved to dance. She wore music like a graceful gown that shimmered as she moved.”

4. O NOMATOPOEIA Onomatopoeia -Words that sound like the objects they name or the sounds those objects make. “Gerald tried to calm her (Angel) down. “ Sh-sh- sh,” he whispered.”

5. H YPERBOLE Hyperbole -A big exaggeration of the truth. “Aunt Queen tried to call out to Gerald, but the pain in her chest made it feel like it was going to explode.”

6. P ERSONIFICATION Personificatio n - A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a human being to an animal, an object, or an idea. “…even if the mysterious orange-and-blue fire that comes out of it liked to tease and dance for only a moment before running away ”

7. I MAGERY Imagery- Language that appeals to the senses. Descriptions of people or objects stated in terms of our senses—sight, touch, smell, sound, taste.
