HAPPY MONDAY! September 16 Bellwork: In your lab on Friday, what was a “control” in the experiment? Why did we use a control? (Hint: a control is something that stays the same in the experiment)

Reminders: Homework: Video & Notes – If you do not have internet or a computer, plan on stay after school or coming in early tomorrow morning! Test/Quiz Make-Ups—before and after school – MUST SHOW ME YOU STUDIED – For the test, you must come for a tutorial BEFORE making up the test. Tell your parents about Open House!

CO: I will understand one of the primary functions of biomolecules. LO: I will finish a lab. I will write notes about the function of biomolecules.

Introduction to Biomolecules

What does “biomolecule” mean? “bio” = living, life “molecule” = smallest unit of a chemical compound So…?

Biomolecules are the molecules found in all living things. They are necessary for LIFE.

So…where do these come from? What are they made of? To figure that out, we have to start at the beginning…

Biochemistry: The Chemistry of Life Matter: anything that takes up space Atom: basic unit of matter, building block of a molecule Molecule: two or more atoms bonded together

Bonds, bonds, bonds! Molecules are atoms bonded together. The bond stores energy. When that bond is broken, energy is released.

Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions are how atoms bond together and break apart. When a chemical reaction breaks a bond, energy is release in the form of heat.

Parts of a Chemical Reaction C + O 2  CO 2 Reactants: what goes INTO the chemical reaction, left side of arrow Products: what is produced from the reaction, right side of arrow Arrow: “yields”, makes Chemical Reactions in a Cake

So…think about it. If molecules are atoms bonded together and the bonds have energy, biomolecules give us energy. Where do we find biomolecules?

Biomolecules 4 major biomolecule: 1.Carbohydrates 2.Lipids 3.Proteins 4.Nucleic acids (we will talk about this one later) We find biomolecules in our FOOD!
