Layers of the Rainforest What are the layers of the rainforest? Study one of the most mysterious environments on Earth, the rainforest.
2
Welcome! Here are the 3 buttons that will help guide you through this activity: Click this arrow to go to the next page! Click this arrow to go to the previous page! Click this house to go to the home page!
3
Welcome! When you get to the quiz, click on the star that is next to your desired answer. For example: If you want to answer “emergent layer click here. Emergent layer
4
Why should you learn about the layers of the rainforest? The rainforest is a beautiful and mysterious ecosystem. There is a lot that we do not know about rainforests. But we do know about the layers and the difference between each layer, therefore giving you information on a very mysterious topic. To be involved with learning the rainforest layers click the “next” button.
5
Layers of the Rainforest There are 4 layers of the rainforest Each layer corresponds with a designated height
6
Layers of the Rainforest Each layer has special characteristics Each layer is different for the surrounding layers Each layer depends on the different aspects of other layers For example, animals need to eat plants and other animals from different layers than the one they normally live in.
7
Layers of the Rainforest Do you remember last week when we measured the heights of all the students in the class?
8
Layers of the Rainforest The layers of the rainforest can be seen by the difference in the heights of our own class! Emergent Canopy Understory layer Forest Floor
9
Layers of the Rainforest The four layers of the rainforest correspond with the heights of your classmates Click on one of your classmates to learn about the layer that they represent! Emergent Canopy Understory Forest Floor Emily Caleb Stephanie Fiona
10
Emergent layer-Emily The emergent layer is the tallest layer. It includes the tree tops and everything from 130 to 160 feet in the air. What kinds of animals do you think live in the emergent layer? Elephants Monkeys Birds 160 ft 130 ft
11
Emergent Layer-Emily Yes! The emergent layer is full of different kinds of birds! Large birds like: Toucan Umbrella bird
12
Emergent layer-Emily Try again. Remember the emergent layer is 130-160 feet in the air!
13
Canopy-Caleb 130 ft 80 ft The canopy is the 2 nd highest layer of the rainforest Animals that reside in the canopy include: Butterflies Squirrel Monkeys
14
Canopy-Caleb 130 ft 80 ft Watch this video about the canopy of the man made indoor rainforest that scientists study from! Consider: What are the plants that live at the top of the canopy called? Do many animals live in the canopy?
15
Understory-Stephanie 80ft 0ft The understory is the 2 nd layer up from the ground It includes everything from the top of the ground to 80 feet in the air What kinds of animals do you think live in the understory? Snakes Lizards
16
Understory-Stephanie 80ft 0ft Correct! Both snakes and lizards live in the understory of the rainforest! Snakes Lizards
17
Forest Floor-Fiona Soil Layer The forest floor is the bottom layer of the rainforest The large animals that cannot leave the ground are considered part of this layer. For example: Elephants Jaguars
18
Forest Floor-Fiona Soil Layer Only 2% of sunlight reaches the forest floor because of all the trees The forest floor is warm and humid with a lot of fungi Decaying plant and animal matter is common to the floor
