Literary Element: Kennings The author uses kennings through this poem. A kenning is an imaginative metaphorical phrase used in place of a simple noun. Not very common in Modern English, but here are a few examples: – “gasoline guzzler” – “cancer stick” – “couch potato” – “tramp stamp”
