Her feet are so small and her chest is so large that she would have to walk on all fours! Real-Life Barbie Doll: Model Transforms into Doll- Like Image - YouTube

Keep this in mind when looking at magazines and media images… Media images aren’t realistic… Media images often show unhealthy examples – not “normal” people….

99.9% of images released in media are computer enhanced… Things like - wrinkles, blemishes, uneven skin tones, sags, bulges, or out of place hairs, can be fixed by a computer before going to print. Often these people have personal trainers, personal chefs, makeup artists, personal shoppers and stylists, AND STILL THE PICTURES ARE DIGITALLY ALTERED!!! Other things to remember about famous men/women that are unrealistic for the average person… Body Image: Media vs Mind - YouTube

Isn't it amazing what a computer can do? YouTube - dove evolution YouTube - dove evolution YouTube - The Photoshop Effect

Where do we get our self esteem?? External Factors – parents, teachers, friends, siblings, media Internal Factors – our own thoughts and feelings that we have about ourselves

Tips to Help Build Self Esteem 1. Identify your strengths 2. Try some new things that interest you 3. Set and achieve goals 4. Don’t read fashion/muscle magazines and compare yourself to unrealistic models. 5. Accept compliments 6. Exercise – be active 7. Laugh and smile 8. Do something for someone else 9. Use positive self talk

Self Talk The messages we tell ourselves about ourselves!! We all have messages running through our heads – like a tape recorder – it repeats all the positive or negative things you hear, see, read or imagine.

Focuses more on FEELINGS and ASSUMPTIONS Example…. If you get an F on a paper – you might say: “I’m so stupid, I hate this class, I can’t ever get a good grade.” (Negative self talk) Negative Self Talk

Focuses on the FACTS and REALITY not on feelings or things you imagine or assume. Example…. If you get an F on a paper – you might say: “This is just one paper, maybe I can redo it. I’m going to check with my teacher to see what things I can do differently, next time I’m sure I will do much better” Positive Self Talk

Image if we all started the day like this little girl Jessica's "Daily Affirmation" - YouTube

Web of Negative Thoughts Often we get “stuck” because of the negative thoughts we think about ourselves…. These thoughts are not based on “fact” but on feelings and on LIES we tend to buy into. Fill in the spider web with all the thoughts about yourself that you tend to get “stuck” on. Some of them maybe you have said to yourself, maybe they are things others have told you and you have believed to be true or have gotten them stuck in your head….
