ENC 4212, Professional & Technical Editing Fall 2015 Week 8 Lecture Slide 4 of 9 Option 1: Are You Ready to Edit? Analyze sample editing tests available through a Google search (the term editing test, without quote marks, returns 153 million hits in 2015!) Create your own test (about one hour long) in three sections Copy editing News editing (also known, for our purposes, as "Substantive editing") Writing of headlines or abstracts Administer the test to selected classmates (instructor will help with this) Tabulate the results / scores Present your written analysis of test results in prose report and website Learning objectives Understand what employers expect of applicants for editing posts Prepare yourself for being tested during job application process

ENC 4212, Professional & Technical Editing Fall 2015 Week 8 Lecture Slide 5 of 9 Option 2: Helping the Helpless Research Identify resources in your metropolitan statistical area (MSA) that help persons who need food, shelter, health care, or development of new job skills Consolidate this information into a useful, easy-to-access message Editing and Publishing Create a simple brochure and website based on your findings Your objective is to provide practical information to those in direct need and those who wish to aid those in need Tips for Success Use plain, simple English readable by someone with a 6th-grade public school education (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_English)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_English Reach people who have limited, if any, access to phone, TV, radio, or internet Focus on pragmatic and useful results, not idealistic ambitions

ENC 4212, Professional & Technical Editing Fall 2015 Week 8 Lecture Slide 6 of 9 Option 3: Do It Your Way Possible choices for Option 3 A user manual for a technical product An informative professional message on a subject of interest to you and of value to your learning experience in this course Any "reasonably challenging" project that requires you to apply and demonstrate the research, analysis, and writing/editing knowledge covered this semester in ENC 4212 See examples posted here: http://www.todroberts.com/USF/4212_Assign4_Samples.htmhttp://www.todroberts.com/USF/4212_Assign4_Samples.htm Option 3 requires both a prose component and a website. All students have free access to USF web-hosting services, but you might prefer to use a commercially available service such as WordPress. All web-posted material must work properly; technical flaws in design or navigation will have a negative effect on your grade. Review the Week 6 lecture and Welcome page tips on website preparation. Allow plenty of time for this task if you are new to the process.
9
ENC 4212, Professional & Technical Editing Fall 2015 Week 8 Lecture Slide 7 of 9 Outline and Format A brief outline (around 150 words) of your topic and approach is required by Mon., Nov. 2, 2015, 6 p.m [ignore audio reference to Nov. 3 in 2014] (earlier if possible). Put this into the body of an email, and include the Week 9 and 10 lecture codes, using this email SUBJECT line: Lastname 4212, Assign 4 outline. I will respond promptly. All three options require the use of at least two media: a prose component and a website. You may, but are not required to, employ additional media such as YouTube video, audio podcast, web-embedded Flash video, or whatever you think will effectively convey your message. (Budget your time carefully.) All students have free access to USF web-hosting services, but you may use your own commercially available service or a free one such as WordPress (see tutorials on the WordPress.com website). As mentioned on the previous slide, all web-posted material must work properly -- technical flaws in design and navigation will have a negative effect on your grade. Review the Week 6 lecture and tips on website preparation on the course Welcome page. If you are a novice at web design, budget the time and effort needed to learn this. Use a web-based tutorial or seek help from others. Your goal is to learn how to do this, not how to hire, persuade, or force someone else to do it for you! If you get stuck, send me an email. This assignment (especially Option 3) gives you an excellent opportunity to practice a key career development tool called "autodidacticism" (self-teaching).

ENC 4212, Professional & Technical Editing Fall 2015 Week 8 Lecture Slide 8 of 9 Recommended Approach Think carefully about the impact your work will have Writing, editing, and communicating are meaningless without all three classic elements in harmony: SENDER, MESSAGE, RECEIVER Except perhaps in a hermit’s diary or Emily Dickinson’s poetry, communication does not occur in a vacuum Review syllabus, course lectures, textbook readings, written assignments, course website, and email messages to ensure that your Assignment 4 submission effectively meets the learning objectives of this course Act as if you will be paid real money for high-quality results (in other words, aim for results you will be proud to publish in your professional portfolio)
