The Rock Cycle Section 6.1
3
Cycles fast: repeat in a short amount of time
A repeating series of events Duration varies S-l-o-w: repeat over a long period of time – millions of years fast: repeat in a short amount of time hours, days

ROCK CYCLE
6
The Rock Cycle Definition:
Repeated series of events by which rock gradually and continually changes from one type of rock to another.
7
Rocks are Recycled in the rock cycle
Rocks recycle into other rocks! During the rocks cycle, rocks are - formed, broken down, reformed There are only THREE basic types of rocks in the rock cycle. igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
8
?????? Where does the rock cycle begin? end?
9
The Rock Cycle There is no “starting” point
There is no beginning and no end. The cycle can go in any direction. It doesn’t have to go “in order” It is a very S – L – O - W cycle
10
Which type of rock is determined by its ORIGIN.
How it formed. (remember 3 ways that minerals form?? Pg. 97) Magma below the Earth’s surface is the source of all the Earth’s rocks
11
But… lets start when the earth was molten during the Hadean Era, 3
But… lets start when the earth was molten during the Hadean Era, 3.8 billion years ago
12
Igneous Rocks (#1-15) Magma (molten, liquid rock) rises
As it nears or reaches the Earth’s surface it cools and crystalizes Solidifies into igneous rock
13
Metamorphic Rock (#16-30) Rocks get buried deep beneath layers and are exposed to HEAT and PRESSURE They get chemically and physically changed (morphed) into new rocks.
14
Sedimentary Rocks (#31-45)
At the surface rocks are broken down into smaller pieces (sediments) by weathering and erosion of WATER, wind or ice Sediments are layered, buried, compacted and cemented into sedimentary rocks
