Rock Cycle A model that shows how rocks are created and changed from one type to another.

Magma Melted rock that is inside the earth.

Lava Melted rock that is on top of the earth’s surface

Sedimentary Rock Rocks made from layers of weathered bits of shells, rocks, and minerals.

Igneous Rock Rocks that are formed when melted rock from inside the earth cools and hardens.

Metamorphic Rock Rocks that form when existing rocks are heated and squeezed deep inside the Earth.

Compact/Compaction When layers of sediment are closely and firmly packed together. Usually due to the top layers putting pressure on the layers underneath.

Sediment Tiny bits of broken shells, rocks, and mineral grains.

Weathering The breaking down of rocks, soil, and minerals by exposing them to water, oxygen, wind, ice, and other outside forces.

Erosion Water, wind, ice, or gravity carry and move bits of broken rock from one place to another.

Product A physical “thing” that has weight and takes up space. (noun) Examples of products of the rock cycle: Magma Sedimentary rock

Process An activity, action, or force that create products. (verb) Examples of processes of the rock cycle: Weathering Melting

Deposition When rock fragments are laid down in a new location.

Cement/Cementation To cause small particles to stick together.
