1 Tom’s Report p21-23  Did you read the directions and his notes? 1.Title: Best container for soup and hot drinks 2.Problem/Question: Which type of container will keep a liquid hot? 3.Tom’s Hypothesis: If we put hot water in four different containers and measure their heat loss for 150 minutes, then the containers with a vacuum will keep the water hot the longest because heat won’t transfer through the air. 4.Independent variable: type of container 5.Dependent Variable: temperature 6.Control: 1 st container 2 nd container 3 rd container 4 th container Silver layer Vacuum CONTROL!!Vacuum

Procedure (Step by step!) 1.Get 4 different containers 1.Silver layer 2.Silver layer and vacuum 3.Regular 4.Vacuum 2.Put 400 ml of water that is 100 degrees Celsius in each of them. 3.After 10 minutes, record the temperature in each container. Record again at 20, 30, 40, 60, 90, 120, 150 minutes.

5 Conclusion  Tom wanted to know which container would keep heat the longest. He put hot water (100ºC) in 4 different containers and measured their heat loss for 150 minutes. He thought that the containers with the vacuum would keep the heat the longest. He was right because the container with the silver layer did just as poorly as the control, losing 35°C total, while the containers with a vacuum lost less than 10°C total. In conclusion, the containers with the vacuum will keep water hot the longest.
